The  purpose of schooling has changed over time, with many governments and policy makers (决策者)currently regarding it as a way of achieving social mobility(实现社会流动). In the past, education was seen  as a way of developing  intellectually curious individuals(培养有强烈求知欲的学者); individuals who would then evolve into responsible  citizens(成为负责任的公民).

Nowadays,  education is seen more asa means to an end (一种达到目的的手段); a way of accomplishing practical  objectives(实现现实目标)  such as getting a job or achieving self-improvement(实现自我提升).

个人观点或态度

From  my perspective, school education is necessary for personal  and social development (个人和社会的发展).

Traditional  school subjects(传统的学校课程) such as science, history and  other arts subjects are currently (adv. 目前)  held in less esteem(n.  尊重) than more vocational  courses(职业课程), such as computing and business.

As the economic model (经济模式)  currently adopted by most countries in the world prioritises economic growth over(把经济增长放在首位)anything else, the majority of people(大多数人)  simply want their school education to prepare them for(为他们准备好) life in the world of work.

In that sense, there is pressure on teachers to  provide students with more practical skills (实用技能).

However,  it is vital for schools to equip children with the capacity for independent inquiry(独立调查),  critical thinking (批判性思维)  and objective judgement (客观判断).

Without  these essential skills, people will not be able to make rational decisions(做出理性的决定)in daily  life and society will not evolve in a progressive way  (前进式发展).

In  order for people to feel obliged to (感到有义务)contribute to society, they need to be educated to believe in the need  to be socially responsible(承担社会责任).

In  that sense, education should not be regarded simply as a means to achieving individual success (实现个人成功).

结论

On balance, the most essential skills at school  are intellectual skills(智力技能).Vocational skills(职业技能)  are also useful but should not be prioritised over traditional subjects(传统科目).Thus,  all skills students acquire (v. 获得) at school should be considered useful.
