BBO竞赛含金量

英国生物奥林匹克竞赛British Biology Olympiad (BBO），是认可度较高的国际权威生物竞赛，由英国皇家生物学会Royal Society of Biology (RSB）于1995年设立，是英国中学历史悠久、极具影响力的理科竞赛，每年有近万名国际学校生参与到该竞赛中角逐各大奖项。 BBO竞赛成绩优秀者可以获得不同等级的奖项，评选方式将按照英国籍学员的成绩分别以总分排名约5%、15%、30%、45%、60%的比例划出得奖分数线，其他国家学员直接参照获奖分数线来决定是否得奖。

有的同学因为课外活动比较弱，会奋力地寻找校外比赛。简单来说，BBO就是一个在英国的比赛，原本是用来筛选英国本国学员去参加国际生物奥林匹克赛的。这个比赛最近才引进到中国，它提供了中国内学员们与国际学员竞争的平台。大家可以成功说服了一个正在读AP生物的同学一起参加比赛。

起初，可以拿一本长达1000多页的大学生物书来备赛的。但是，很显然，这并不是一个很容易的工作，所以在中途放弃了好一会儿。除此之外，为了进阶生物成绩在winter vacation预习了IB还没有上的课。

比赛本身非常有挑战性。120分钟内完成90道选择题。 与IB的paper 1相比，题目更加复杂难选；与AP选择题相比，题目更注重理论，但是需要分析的数据非常少。这些题目的难点在于它的范围包括整个国际学校生物学，而且需要一定的选择题技巧。但是，回顾一下这次的比赛，如果把整个国际学校课程都学完了，是不会有很大的问题的。重点在于根据题目比重分配好复习重点，用一系列教材进行复习。

讲起获奖感想，看到自己得了奖以后是非常开心激动的。我和我朋友都有很多不确定的题目，所以没有期待很好的表现。这也许是为什么我看到我们两个人都得了银奖后那么惊讶，开心吧。整体来说，这次经验非常宝贵，因为它给予我更深度地学习生物的动力。

I took part in the British Biology Olympiad on March 18th. I got to know this competition when I saw the message that our teacher posted in the group chat. At that time, I was eagerly looking for competitions to take part in, since I was weak in extracurricular activities. I came to know about the competition more when I visited the ASDAN official website. Basically, it is biology competition held in Britain, originally used for discovering talented students to send as competitors in the International Biology Olympiad. It was only recently introduced into China. I persuaded my friend in AP biology to take part in the competition together. At first, we prepared with college biology books that were over 1000 pages long. However, obviously, the task soon came to be very discouraging and we gave up the attempt in the middle. In the meanwhile, I previewed several chapters of IB biology curriculum in the winter vacation, just to help up with my grades. The competition date came rather quickly, and we rushed a lot.

The test itself proved to be very challenging. It consisted of 90 multiple choice questions, which were to be solved in 120 minutes. Compared to IB paper one questions, the questions were a little more complex and tricky; compared to AP multiple choices, they were more theoretical and less data-based. Personally, I think it was a little hard since it covers the whole range of biology and requires a lot of multiple choice solving skills. However, looking back on the questions, I feel like if the student has finished the entire high school biology curriculum, there wouldn’t be major difficulties. The key is to check the question type and divide time wisely, while using a variety of sources.

As to the feeling after getting the award, I was really excited and happy. Both I and my friend did not expect a high performance since there were a lot of questions that we were not certain about. That is probably why I was so astonished and happy to see that both of us have gained the silver medal. Overall, I think it was very valuable since it has given me the initiative to study biology in a greater detail. I was even more motivated to study biology after the competition.
