Grade five students at our Hongqiao Campus are currently in the midst of the "Healthy Food & Healthy Lifestyle" unit in their Mandarin Classes. The lower school students are studying how food choices reflect people’s varying dining culture and how nutrition choices are connected with people’s lifestyles.
Taking learning inside the classroom and making it actionable by connecting it to real life situations is a big part of the Lower School Mandarin programme at SCIS. Therefore, we were very fortunate to have the opportunity to invite Chef Tang to our Hongqiao Campus and deliver a cooking class to all Grade five mandarin learners.
Having studied in one of the top culinary schools in Tokyo, Mr. Tang mastered his skills in Japanese as well as Western and Chinese cuisine. He was once the owner of a renowned Japanese restaurant in Shanghai, before switching his focus to become a teacher and deliver cooking classes through his home based cooking studio, Zencha.
During the highly interactive lesson, Chef Tang demonstrated the process of making “无油健康鸡排三明治” (Wú yóu jiànkāng jī pái sānmíngzhì) or “Oil-less Healthy Chicken Sandwich”. Students were taught how to: choose high quality raw ingredients, use appropriate cooking utensils, combine different textures of food and combine it all to make a great tasting dish.

Our young and eager learners had the chance to practice their mandarin language and questioning skills as well as acquire fundamental cooking knowledge.
“When seeing students with a smile on their face and cheering out loud, saying: “this is the best sandwich and the best mandarin less ever”, all the overtime preparation work was worth it”
