English instruction at YK Pao School is unique in its emphasis on integrated learning. Rather than teach grammar or sentence construction in a standalone manner, our English teachers incorporate these aspects of English teaching into projects and activities that allow students to apply their newfound knowledge in a practical manner. What's more, Pao School's bilingual immersion environment allows students to gain high proficiency in English in a relatively short period of time, compared to traditional schools where English is confined to specific classroom time.
Researchers have found, time and again, that students better absorb what they're taught in classroom lessons when they see for themselves that the knowledge is valuable for its practical applications. Learning in a siloed way is not effective, says Andrew Ashton, Primary English Teacher.
If kids just do standalone grammar lessons, it doesn't stick. It sinks in much better if it's incorporated into projects and activities - the real things they're working on."
——Andrew Ashton
At the same time, Pao School is constantly striving to optimize its learning environment. Over the past year, we developed a marking system that provides opportunities for children to get detailed developmental feedback. In terms of teacher-student engagement, "marking is second only to face-to-face discussions with students in terms of its importance,” says Stuart Willy, Head of Upper Primary English.
Another strength of Pao School's English curriculum is its assessment system, which includes formative assessment (regular feedback) and summative feedback, which occurs at the end of each lesson or unit. Thanks to this detailed feedback mechanism, as the year progresses, teachers develop a big picture of what the child is like. Since the assessments occur at every level, teachers can see how students evolve from one year to the next.
That informs how you teach them, how you will teach your class and how you distinguish the different individuals in your class.
——Stuart Willy
During classroom time, Pao School gives students a wide variety of opportunities to learn different types of English writing. One of the most popular of these is poetry composition, during which students compose their own original works of English poetry. Learning English poetry not only allows students to apply classroom knowledge in a fun way, it also deepens their understanding of the language, especially their ability to express themselves in English.
Now we are delighted to share some recent works composed by our young poets:
Year 3
The Sea
by Cookie, Etien, Yoyo, Ivy
When the strong wind blows the sea,
It begins to splash and crash the rocks.
In the deep blue water you can see,
Things can be swallowed under the dock.
The enormous sea smashes and clashes,
It breaks the rough, hard stone.
It is starting to explode but dashes,
Destroying the fishes home.
It groans and moans,
Like a lonely mother.
Singing in a sad tone,
Trying to find her daughter.
In sun and warmth she is calm.
Rain is her enemy, they clash!
The sea will roar as loud as a drum,
Coming back to the beach to watch the fire flies flash.
Mountains
by Sissi, Ethan, Jeffrey
The jade green mountains
With trees like green umbrellas,
Calm creek flows, whoosh, whoosh.
Peaceful, gentle mountain
With not a small trace of sound.
All birds are asleep.
The wind's a cool breeze
Making the silence louder,
Drifts to where it wants.

The Forest
by Matilda, Duar, Jay
Trees as tall as the skies,
Giving the quiet animals supplies.
Providing clean, fresh air,
Making life peaceful and fair.
It's clear and quickly flows,
When the sun hits it shines and glows.
Filled with lies,
The beautiful river never dries or dies.
The wind likes playing in the forest,
Never seeming to rest.
Singing with bees,
Dancing between trees.
Year 4
Polar Bear
By Ian, Coco, Eli, Rebecca, Gordon
As chilling as
A Freezer.
Here come the
Seal squeezer.
As powerful as the
Soldier
As a hunter in
The winter.
His roar was
Like the thunder.
As clever as
Harry Potter.
As wooly as a teddy bear.
Always take care, breathing in cold air.
Look! There a polar bear!

Penguin
4C Group Work
Belly as pale as snow,
Neck as bright as a bow,
He's as a colorful as a rainbow,
He's as soft as a marshmallow,
Back as black as a shadow,
He's as fast as a minnow.
He's as adorable as a cat,
As funny as a mat,
He's jumping into the sea,
Swimming so free.
He's very cute,
And in a good mood.
He's never rude,
Eating good food.
His eyes as beautiful as a rose,
Sharp claws are its toes,
And sharp beak for a nose
A wedding tuxedo he wears for clothes.

Year 5
School is Cool
By Emily
School school school!
People might think that school is not cool!
But don't be a fool.
As if school never existed, our learning would not be
assisted!
Chinese, Math, English, teachers teach,
so we can practice and improve our speech.
EU, sports, music and art,
we go through the day due to the schedule chart.
We learn about nature, peace and seasons,
and that the education of technology is for many reasons.
We learn what carnivores and omnivores are,
and read stories about the Sun and our nearest star.
We never worry about too much stress,
because we've got 45 minutes of well-earned recess!
We take pride as we build up our character traits,
and always tell people "you are great!"
We respect others' feelings and balance our time,
and would never think to steal even a dime.
The school gives you knowledge, you learn things new,
and there is always something amazing to do.
So although you may feel that school is not cool,
For your own good, you should go to school!

The Ocean
by Jason and James
See the people in the shining sand
See the kites above the blue ocean
See the seagulls flying in the blue sky
See the seaweed dancing in the water
See the coral painting the ocean floor
See the waves splashing the palm trees
Feel the warmth from the ocean's heat
Feel the golden sand on your feet
Feel the jelly fish stinging you
Feel the wood of the ocean port
Hear the peace brought by the bird
Hear the waves hitting the shore
Hear the boat motors roar
Hear the dolphins singing around you
Smell the ocean
Smell the food sold at the seashore
Smell the fresh air through your nose
Taste the salty ocean
Taste the fresh coconut
Touch the ocean blue

Dawn of the future
by Justin, Kevin and Xuanchen
(3 ,2, 1, launch off!)
I'm flying to Mars.
On NASA's rocket ship,
Looking back on Earth.
People tiny like ants,
Lights on the side of roads
Swarms of cars buzzing on highways,
Trees blanket the mountains,
Buildings spreading like spider webs,
Ocean shining flat as a mirror.
Looking back at space,
Lights of satellites flash by,
Comets gliding swiftly through space,
The moon with white gray craters,
Mars angry like fire,
Neptune calm as water
Feel the stillness of space filling your
heart.
Looking forward to the future,
Landing on Mars with a bump,
Exploring the plains as still as ever,
Oh, how good would the future be.
