Spelling Bee 英语拼写大赛始于1925年，如今已是美国家喻户晓的英文拼字竞赛活动。举办方多为学校自发组织或各州电视台举办，选手通常要求是15岁以下并且最高不超过8年级（相当于国内初中毕业）。这个比赛近年来除了美国本土参赛者外，也吸引了来自加拿大，新西兰，中国的选手。

The Spelling Bee English Spelling Competition began in 1925 and is now well known in every household of the United States. The organizers are mostly schools. The participants are usually under 15 years old and are at the 8th grade or lower (before the third year of junior high school). In recent years, the Spelling Bee competition has attracted participation from Canada, New Zealand and China, in addition to the US native contestants.

今年6月份深圳诺德安达双语学校举办了首次的Spelling Bee比赛，学校将通过班级赛，对抗赛，最后到校园赛，选出三位我们的拼读达人，为他们颁发证书同时为他们的学院加多40分。

In June 2020, NAS Shenzhen held its first Spelling Bee Competition. Through three stages - class competition, inter-class competition, and a final school competition - three of the best spelling students were selected. They were awarded certificates and their representing house 40 points.

读单词、写单词是许多学生学习英语的难点,很多学生因为这一难点对英语学习产生了畏难情绪,继而恶性循环发展成了学困生。自然拼读法可以帮助学生们做到看词能读,听音能写。在诺德安达的教学中我们的老师运用自然拼读法能将学生从死记硬背的沉重负担中解放出来。

对于中国的很多小孩子来说，很多小孩是习惯了手写，拼写，而不是拼读，因为中国的小孩子不习惯把英文直接发音读出来，其实这点是错误的，小孩子要从接受语音教学要根据听到的信息再拼写出来，这个过程是可以锻炼小孩子的听力及理解能力。

单词量是学好一门语言的基础，学校为了培养和提高学生的词汇量。我们希望通过这个比赛可以提升孩子们对拼读的兴趣，可以让孩子们将拼读作为学习单词的一种习惯，而不是拼写。

Pronouncing and spelling English vocabulary is difficult for many Chinese students. With Phonics, students attach sounds to letters and letter blends. This produces a more concrete understanding of how to pronounce a word as well as how to spell a word. At NAS Shenzhen, the teachers use Phonics daily to help drive our student language acquisition and understanding. It frees students from the heavy burden of the rote memorization of vocabulary list as previously done.

For most of the students in China, spelling means memorizing the letters of a word. Spelling a word as a whole. However, letters actually make up the word and learning the letter sounds and how they fit together to produce different sounds within a word is a better way to learn the spelling of words. This leads a deeper understanding of the word, how to pronounce the word and how to spell the word. They learn how to spell words by how they are pronounced. This learning process is supportive of the students’ speaking and listening skills.

Vocabulary is the foundation of language learning. To help develop the students’ vocabulary, NAS Shenzhen designed the Spelling Bee competition to arouse their interest in words and to help them cultivate a vocabulary through Phonics and reading. The more a student reads, the more their vocabulary increases. Together, our Dragon Reading Competition, Spelling Bee and our Phonics program all work together to increase our students’ vocabulary, spelling, reading comprehension, speaking and listening abilities.
