Juilliard Faculty Performance°

On 4th July, we had a Juilliard Faculty Performance, a special event of 2018 Summer Performing Arts with Juilliard | Strings Programme on campus.
The Juilliard artist faculty and students were busy rehearsing all afternoon to make sure that they presented a wonderful performance to the audience. Even with a sudden thunderstorm in the afternoon, the audience was still excited for the show! Around 6 o’clock, parents and students who came to listen to the performance arrived at the campus.

The performance began at 7 o'clock with Nick West, Principal of NACIS Shanghai, giving a welcome greeting to the audience. He expressed thankfulness to The Juilliard School for its collaboration with Nord Anglia Education Group, which brings high-quality music, dance and drama teaching to students, and gives students a deep engagement with performing arts - promoting cultural literacy, creativity, critical thinking and collaboration.
In the Juilliard Faculty Performance, five pieces of music were presented to the audience.
With Claude Debussy's String Quartet in G minor, Op. 10 as the opening music, Annie told the audience that the same piece of music can give people a completely different feeling through the control of the speed, strength and rhythm.
Next was Tan Dun, which is an outstanding representation of blend between Chinese and Western music. His Eight Colors for String Quartet was chosen by the Juilliard artist faculty for the performance. The audience learned that the Western string instruments can imitate the sounds of traditional Chinese musical instruments such as drums, erhus, Sona and so on and were given a demonstration of how the sounds are made.
Maurice Ravel’s Sonata for Violin and Cello is a string duet that was performed by 2 of our faculty members, Saeunn and Annie.
Modern composer Andres Martin brings traditional Latin rhythms to his music and his Daniella for Violin, Viola, Bass brings the audience into the magical world of tango.
Finally, Antonin Dvorak's String Quintet No. 2, Op. 77, brought the show to a climactic finish.

The whole performance was spectacular and was a wonderful celebration of our collaboration with The Juilliard School. The Juilliard artist faculty successfully integrated music knowledge into the performance and brought the audience into the wonderful world of music. There was warm applause after the performance. Students and parents are honored to have the opportunity to attend the performance and enjoyed meeting the artists in a post-show reception.
