Reading
For most of us,treasured stories
enrichmemories and shape our
understanding of life.
Reading powerful literature can change theway we understand history, ourselves, and the world. However, the habit ofreading great literature has begun to falter.
Reading great books is a fading practice.According to the National Endowment for the Arts, literary reading has declinedsteadily to an all-time low. Does this matter? Absolutely. As the report shows, reading correlates to educational achievement. High quality books encouragelifelong learning.
The great orator and leader Abraham Lincolnasserted “The things I want to know are in books.” In her Philosophy ofEducation, influential English educator Charlotte Mason wrote that “the bestthought the world possesses is stored in books; we must open books tochildren.” More recently, research suchas that shared by Keith Stanovich in Psychology Today corroborates the profoundefficacy of reading. As he affirms in a related video, “Does reading make yousmarter? Yes.” Similarly, notable speaker, Alan Zimmerman argues that readingis “one of the most important things you MUST do to achieve extraordinarysuccess at work as well as at home.”
Messages abound urging the importance ofreading, including this TED talk by Lisa Bu about how books open your mind.Likewise, according to David Robinson, one of the creators of Nord Anglia’sGlobal Library, “Reading literally transforms lives. It boosts academicachievement in all subject areas and is proven to improve empathy.”
We derive the highest benefit by choosingthe richest literature. Books might be described as either twaddle or living,to borrow a phrase from Ms. Mason. Twaddle represents simplistic writing thatdoes little to stimulate critical thinking. In contrast, living books expandthe mind, elevate the spirit, and help us grapple with meaningful questionsabout humanity. Living literature offers fruitful ideas and a passion forlearning.
If we challenge children (and ourselves) toingest books of merit such as To Kill a Mockingbird, Things Fall Apart,Passionate Observer, or The Medusa and the Snail, we will see exponentialgrowth of knowledge, understanding, and humanity. The number of valuable booksis countless. The reasons for reading living literature are many. Together, they promote lifelong learning:
1、Reading builds vocabulary. We use languageto understand our world.
2、Reading develops interests. A multitude ofnew ideas and possibilities become apparent.
3、Readingreflects humanity. We grapple with human experience in all its diversity.
4、Readingintroduces you. What we read helps define us to others, including universitiesand colleagues.
5、Readingopens the world. Experiences from across the earth and beyond become ours.
6、Reading boosts empathy. Our perspectivesbroaden, and we gain a true global understanding.
7、Reading stimulatesimagination. Literature places before us an endless feast of ideas.
8、Reading creates thought. Cognitivestructures develop from the mind’s diet.
9、Readingreveals genius. We discover profound thoughts from the greatest minds.
As an educator, a father, and a learner, Ibelieve the evidence is clear. Literature remains one of the most powerfulpathways for productive learning. Read living books, great literature, and openthe doors of the past, the present, and your future. Reading helps each of usdevelop a full life.
