Greetings from Wellington College China

Mid-Autumn Festival represents family; a time for reunion and peace. It is celebrated when the moon is believed to be at its fullest – a sign of prosperity and happiness. It is a tradition of over 3,000 years dating back to the moon worship during the Shang Dynasty (1600 – 1046BC). The practice of eating moon cakes has been evident for over 650 years and represents a longstanding tradition of stories celebrating Mid-Autumn.
Cultural traditions are important because they transmit shared values and stories from one generation to the next. Stories associated with Mid-Autumn Festival; Chang’e and Hou Yi, Wu Gang chopping the Cherry Bay and the story of the Jade Rabbit have been told for generations and are passed down through families, giving meaning to the festival for the youngest family members.

Like the metaphor of the mid-autumn festival lantern lighting the way ahead on an exciting voyage, the Wellington College China leaders are also preparing for a stimulating journey. Our vision is to inspire pupils to become intellectual, independent, individual and inclusive; our Wellington Identity. This is based on a model of holistic education that establishes values, aptitudes and knowledge built upon the rich heritage and culture of being Chinese, but also underpinning the development of effective global citizens. We aim to prepare pupils for success during and beyond life at the College.
Wellington College China extends warms mid-autumn season greetings to the community we serve.

Happy Mid-Autumn Festival from Wellington College Bilingual Shanghai
In March 2016, we welcomed a select group of dedicated founding families. It was the start of a much anticipated adventure for Wellington College Bilingual Shanghai, as our young pupils began their bilingual learning journey. By the time these same pupils gave their first performance to an audience of proud parents and impressed guests for our 100 Days of Friendship celebration in June, we realised we had indeed to become a family sharing a vision embedded in the Wellington Values of Courage, Kindness, Integrity, Respect, Responsibility.
We are now beginning the 2016-2017 academic year and in a very short time our family has tripled in size to over 200 pupils. It has been fantastic welcoming returning and new Wellingtonians for the start of the term. After just a few weeks, the children have settled in and are enjoying exploring and learning through play with their new friends. For the Mid-Autumn Festival, the pupils have produced their first group artwork with numerous other exciting cultural activities planned before the holiday. We are also busy preparing our first major event of the academic year in conjunction with the Wellington College Festival of Education. On 19th and 20th October, we have invited a group of local and international experts into the setting to host learning workshops for parents and professional development for staff. The workshops will cover a variety of topics such as sustainability, creativity and play, and learning through music. The festival is the first of many community events planned for an academic year that promises to be filled with growth and discovery here at Wellington College Bilingual Shanghai.
