STEAM is a unique and essential program and NAS Ningbo is committed to stimulate children’s interest in science and to improve their scientific perspective. Every week, students actively engage in the STEAM lesson to explore the unknowns, from which we have seen great potential in their future development. For this term, our students have the opportunities to participate in various online and offline STEAM challenges:

Challenge 1: Explore the Energy Change in Different Reactions
Although we can feel the temperature change in the surrounding environment through the skin, it would be very difficult when the temperature change is not significant. FLIR, a temperature-testing instrument, is able to respond to energy change precisely. As a result, FLIR has played an important role in this epidemic control and prevention. For instance, body temperature can be easily tested in the crowded airport. In the STEAM lesson, students used FLIR to explore the energy change in different reactions. When the surrounding temperature is relatively in low condition, it appears to be purple, which will turn to deep yellow when it’s high. Students are able to find the movement of the hot material using FLIR. Also, students explored the ability of different color to absorb the heat.

Challenge 2: Turn Waste into Magic
Our environment is facing greater challenge nowadays, which means we must strictly follow the waste separation policy. In this STEAM lesson, students are challenged to make waste into something amazing. One student made a beautiful pen container using waste paper. One student made a perfect bouquet and sent to the parents as a gift. Thomas used various waste materials and turn them into a Wishing Box, which shows his ambition to create something far more great in the future.

Makey makey

Challenge 3: Makey makey
Makey makey, designed for DIY enthusiasts, is a development board invented by MIT. Students connected Makey makey to apples and made them into fruit guitar to play different notes. By connecting Makey makey with keyboard, students were able to play different games. Makey makey can also be used with Scratch together. During the epidemic, students learnt basic Scratch programming such as sound and video control programs and using various instruments to play notes. After programming, students connected USB cable to Makey makey and their work was fascinating.

Challenge 4: Water Rocket
Recently, the spacecraft made by SpaceX was successfully launched, which inspired our students to launch DIY water rocket at school. In order to make it happen, students explored different factors that would affect emission height including volume of water, launching angle, and rocket gravity. Students used drones to better observe the impact of the variables. In addition, students designed parachute to make the water rocket land safely, but they are facing a new challenging---how to open the parachute. Our student will continue to find the answer for this question.

There is no limit in science, and we must keep trying to explore the unknowns. Meanwhile, science is everywhere, and our students need to learned to an observer, a thinker, an inquirer, and to be resilient. We look forward to seeing more and more “Little Scientist” start their journey at NAS Ningbo and make contribution to our society in the future.
