Anthony Orme
Computer Science and STEAM Teacher
Anthony has been an educator for 11 years, 8 of those in international schools predominately in the Middle East. Anthony previously worked as a teacher for Qatar Petroleum where he worked at both Dukhan English School and Mesaieed International School before moving to Nord Anglia Education where he has worked in Qatar and Uzbekistan, and now in Beijing.
I was first introduced to STEAM when I was teaching in Qatar. The current international principal of Nord Anglia School Beijing, Mr. Macaulay, who I worked with at the time in Qatar, gave me the permission to attend this training and I never looked back. I have observed students, girls and boys, working collaboratively using variety of skills to consider the planning, design and making of different products for a purpose. By providing the students the skills they need to completing projects, they can be allowed to work independently to come up with workable solutions. Dr. Theodore Chiasson, former dean of IT from the College of North Atlantic put this in a different perspective, “I have found that when you build a robot yourself and you want it to do something new, you have to learn more mathematics, more science or more physics, to be able to do that. The motivation for the learning is then within the student, for which makes for a complete paradigm shift in terms of the learning environment”.

The Growth of STEAM

With the global growth in STEAM related careers – science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics - Nord Anglia Education is encouraging its students to develop their skills and talents in these areas and hopefully move into careers in these disciplines. Research has found that girls that get into STEAM are more likely to go into engineering careers.
However, STEAM is not just about learning robotics. Robotics is just a small part of what STEAM is about. STEAM is about hacking things and reinventing them, for example, constructing rockets out of tubes. STEAM is about looking at problems that there are in society and finding solutions, for example, discovering new vaccines. STEAM is about looking closer at things, for example, taking close shots of objects.
STEAM allows barriers to be broken down between subjects, enabling pupils to make connections between them, developing a holistic understanding and applying them to real-world scenarios outside the normal curriculum. It allows students to get together into teams to analyse problems, suggest solutions and develop a finished article that will hopefully be quicker, faster and more efficient than your opponents. STEAM does not just build on students’ knowledge and understanding of different subject areas, but also helps them develop their IB learner profile.

STEAM V.S Nord Anglia Education Group

Nord Anglia Education has developed a collaboration through the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to create a world-renowned STEAM partnership. Through this partnership, Nord Anglia students get the opportunity to partake in STEAM challenges developed by outstanding professors from MIT, in addition with the chance to attend regional and global conferences to other schools in China as well as MIT. Further, through Nord Anglia Education’s student portal, Global Campus, students get the opportunity to partake in challenges and share their designs with students from across the world.
Nord Anglia School Beijing is embracing the STEAM principles through getting students to complete challenges using Global Campus as well as in-house challenges. Students have created tall towers made of paper; reinvented material around the home that would otherwise be thrown away into something new; and created catapults. Over the coming weeks and months, students are going to attend Global Campus Xtra Challenge -create a music using glassware and the Marble Run Challenge. With the Botball equipment currently in the school, we have a fantastic opportunity for students to learn programming and engineering in a very practical way and hopefully take students to the national competition.
let’s watch students ‘work.

The traditional approach of teaching individual subjects in isolation simply doesn’t fit with the challenges of the modern world, society and workplace; teaching students how to pass exams in various areas is simply not enough. STEAM education offers an interdisciplinary, collaborative approach to learning, that prepares students for real-world tasks and success. NAS Beijing provide STEAM course to all students to make sure that they could meet all requirements for future work.
