今年7月,NACIS迎来了第一届十二年级的毕业生。在参加完IB全球统考并欢度暑假之际,大家也都沉浸于接受理想大学offer的喜悦之中。


早早就收到了乔治华盛顿EDEvian就是其中一位。Evian是在NACIS创校之初加入中学部的首批学员之一。不但在学习上不用父母操心,她还是一名热衷于参加艺术活动和公益活动的学生。在校期间,她曾带领学院参与学校夏日表演的演出并拿下第一名的好成绩,也曾远赴诺德安达坦桑尼亚基地用一砖一瓦亲手为当地的孩子搭建教室。她说,“从20169月我第一次踏进NACIS的校园,这三年对我来说不单只是一段高中学习经历,更是一个破茧成蝶的蜕变。”

个性化辅导让我找到努力的方向

诺德安达的教育方式跟我以往在体制内学校接受到的方式是截然不同的,最让我体会深刻的是老师的“个性化”辅导。

从选课到分班,从一对一的家长会到“私人订制”的备考练习,让我感受到了在学习的路上,老师同学家长都在我的身边鼓励着我陪我一起努力。还记得IB大考前两个月,大家都在积极紧张的备考,英文老师非常关注每个学生的英语程度也很清楚我们各自的强项和弱项是什么。她给我们每个人发了一个信封,信封里装有适合每个人不同的考卷,着重突击我们不足的部分。我一直很惧怕写作,但是英文老师让我完全消除了我的顾虑。她会跟我面谈并仔细批改我的论文,对于我写的好的部分给与肯定,也会让我知道自己哪里还有欠缺。除了安慰我之外,她更多的是和我制定以后的学习计划,查漏补缺,让我认清了我接下来要努力的方向,从而下一次做到更好。其实这不仅仅是一种好的学习方式,更让我学会了一种面对困难时应该采取的积极态度——不急不躁,直面问题逐个击破。

老师的鼓励让我自信的站在舞台上

老师对我们都很关心,他们会通过观察和交谈,发现我们每个人的闪光点和兴趣点,这非常重要。

我从小一直特别喜欢戏剧,从一年级开始我就学习民族舞,三到六年级学了音乐剧课程,七年级至今在学美声,我有一颗向往舞台表演的心,但是内向的性格总是让我停滞不前,面对表演充满恐惧。


十一年级初,学校戏剧ECA招募小演员需要试镜,那时我特别纠结,我既想参加,但是又担心自己表现不佳。Ms.Rebecca她一直记得我喜欢戏剧表演,有一天当我又一次站在招募海报前驻足观望的时候,她停下脚步问我“你不是一直很喜欢戏剧吗?去试一下吧!”她坚定的表情,化作一股很大的力量在我的身后推了我一把。之后我参加并顺利通过了试镜,还认识了好多喜欢戏剧的学弟学妹。我想如果不是那次Ms.Rebecca对我的鼓励,恐怕我会错过那场对我意义重大的试镜。在此之后,我和戏剧社的其他同学每周三排练到五点,还去了诺德安达兄弟学校表演。我们还一起参加了诺德安达的第一次夏日表演summer showcase。老师给了我们足够的信任和空间施展自己。我们每个学院都有15分钟的时间表演自编自演的节目。作为学院最高年级的学生,我带领了学弟学妹们一起构思节目,编排舞蹈、戏剧,凭借我的舞台和表演经验,我把所有的节目串联成一场完整的演出,最终获得了第一名的好成绩。

还有一次,我参加了NACISTALK演讲会,我需要在舞台上分享一个话题,有点类似于TEDTALKS。当时我正在准备最后一次托福的考试,又一直想不到能引发别人兴趣的主题,所以一直在打退堂鼓。我的数学老师,也是我的班主任,一直鼓励我不要放弃,他鼓励我从我自己最喜欢的东西出发,我马上想到了艺术。我从小到大都是一个艺术狂热者,其实很多孩子最初的梦想也都是成为舞蹈家,音乐家,但可惜的是艺术教育一直都被边缘化,很多时候学生们被迫只关注主课成绩,而忽略了在艺术上的培养。到底为什么我们不能成为艺术家?我把我的思考在NACISTALK上分享了给大家。

除此之外,学校还给了我很多其他机会让我参与其中,例如年末学校新年表演的筹备和导演。这些经历让我变得更加自信,为自己喜欢的事情去争取而不是胆怯是我在人生中上到的重要一课。

In July, NACIS welcomed the first graduates from Grade 12. After taking IBDP examination, they are delighted to enjoy the summer vacationand accept offers from their ideal university.

 

One of them, Evian received an early decision offer from George Washington University. Evian was one of the first students to join NACIS when NACIS was founded. Meanwhile, she was a student who was keen on participating in art and public welfare activities. At school, she used to lead her House to participate in the summer showcase and won the first prize. She also went to the Nord Anglia Tanzania base to build classrooms for local children. She said, ‘It has been three years since I first stepped into the campus in September 2016. For me, it is not only a high-school learning experience, but also a process for me to become better self.”

The Personalized Teaching Enabled Me to Find My Direction

The teaching at NACIS is completely different from that of national schools. What impressed me most is the personalized teaching. 


From course selection to form distribution, from one-to-one parent meeting to ‘personalized’exercises before exams, I deeply felt that my teachers, classmates and parentswere all around me, encouraging me and working together with me during my learning. I can still remember that two months before the IBDP examination, when everyone was working hard to get prepared, our English teacher, who paid close attention to the English proficiency of each student and knew about our strengths and weaknesses, gave an envelope to each student. Inside the envelope, there was a personalized test paper for us, focusing on our weakness. I was afraid of writing, but my English teacher eliminated my worries. She talked with me on my essays and corrected them carefully. She gave recognition to what I did well and let me know my shortcomings. In addition to comforting me, she made future study plans with me to improve, which made me know about what I should do in the future, so that I could do better next time. 


In fact, I not only gained a good study method, but also learned a positive way to deal with difficulties - take it easy, face the problems and solve them one by one.

Teachers’ encouragement Gave Me Confidence to Stand on Stages

Our teachers were really concerned about us. They discovered our strengths and hobbies through observation and conversation, which was important.

I have always been a drama lover since childhood. I have been learning folk dance since grade one, and I practiced musical drama from grade 3 to grade 6. Since grade 7, I have been learning bel canto. So when I joined NACIS, I yearned for stage performance. However, my introverted personality always made me stand still. I had no bravery to perform on stage.


At the beginning of Grade 11, the school drama ECA was recruiting actors and actresses and auditions would be arranged. I was hesitant. I wanted to participate in it, but I was afraid that I might perform poorly. Ms. Rebecca always remembered my hobby. One day, when I stopped at the poster again, she stopped and asked me, ‘You love drama, don’t you? Just have a try!’ 


Her encouragement helped me to make up my mind. I passed the audition andmet many younger students who loved drama. Without Ms. Rebecca’s words, I would have missed the audition which meant a lot to me. From then on, I rehearsed every Wednesday till 5 p.m. With other students of drama ECA and went to other Nord Anglia schools to perform. We also took part in NACIS’s first summer showcase. Our teacher gave us trust and space to show ourselves. Each house had 15 minutes to perform its own program. As a student of the highest grade, I led fellow students to design programs and compose dances and the drama. With my stage and performance experience, I linked all programs into a complete performance, and we finally won the first prize.

I would also like to share my experience in NACIS TALK, in which I was asked to share a topic on the stage. It was quite like TEDTALKS. At that time, I was preparing for my last TOEFL test, and could not think of a topic that might arouse others’ interest. So, I thought of giving up. My maths teacher, who was also my form tutor, encouraged me not to give up. He encouraged me to start from something I like, so I thought of art. I have been an art fanatic since I was a child. 


In fact, many children's initial dreamswere to become dancers or musicians. However, art education has always been marginalized. Many students only focus on their main subjects while neglecting the cultivation in art as they grow up. Why on earth can't we be artists? I shared my thoughts at NACIS TALK.

Besides, NACIS also gave me many other chances such as the preparation and direction of the new year performance. These experiences helped me to become more confident. I learned that I should fight for what I love rather than being timid.
