Recently, we have received many requests from parents who were willing to visit our campus. Therefore, the school teaching team carefully prepared Korean Family Open Day in June. We will share with you the unique educational philosophy of our school so that you can better understand the advantages of HQIS and why our schools offer unparalleled standards of international education. Parents will be able to visit our campus, meet our community, and experience the learning life of HQIS students.

요즘 많은 학부모님들로부터 캠퍼스 탐방과 관련하여 요청을 받았습니다. 이에 따라 학교 직원들은 17일 한국 가정을 대상으로 한  오픈데이 행사를 준비했습니다. 본 행사에서 저희 학교의 특별한 교육 이념과 국제교육의 장점에 대해 학부모님들이 더욱 깊이 있게 이해할 수 있도록 하겠습니다. 학부모님들은 직접 캠퍼스와 학습 공간을 방문해 HQIS 학생들의 학교생활을 체험할 수 있습니다.

Hong Qiao International School was established in 1997. We officially became an approved International Baccalaureate (IB) school in 2012. IB education standards are now well-respected around the world.   We are particularly proud that Hong Qiao International school was one of the first IB schools to be established in China.

홍차오국제외국인자녀학교(이하 홍차오국제학교)는 1997년 설립됐습니다. 2009년 신청하여 2012년 심사를 거쳐 IB-PYP의 인증학교가 됐습니다. IB교육은 세계적으로 유명하며 홍차오국제학교는 중국 내 최초의 IB 인증학교 중 하나입니다.

Over our 23 years, Hong Qiao International School, the oldest international school in Shanghai, has become a comprehensive school with a 15-grade level of academic excellence fully articulated including Kindergarten, Primary, Middle School, and High Schools all on the one campus.

Parents who choose HQIS will not experience the disruption of repeatedly changing schools after each school level. The student will not need to adjust to different instructional methods, teaching philosophies or school cultures  HQIS offers a coherent mission, and educational program from 18 months to 18 years of age.

In 2015, Hongqiao International School moved to its new campus, in the beautiful Gubei area. 홍차오국제학교는 18개월에서 18세 사이의 학생들에게 양질의 수업을 제공하고 학문적 능력을 기릅니다:

✔️For students from 18 months to 2 years of age, the school offers an Emergent Curriculum that builds social skills, large and small motor skills.

✔️For students from 3 to 12 years of age, we offer the IB-PYP Programmme.

✔️For middle school and high school students, we follow the Common Core standards taught through inquiry instruction combined with skill-based project-based learning.  We offer AP courses in high school. Currently, we offer AP Math, AP Chemistry, AP Physics and AP Biology., More AP courses will be available in the future.

홍차오국제학교에서 학생들은 열심히 공부해야 하지만, 공부의 목표는 단순히 명문 학교에 들어가기 위한 것이 아니라 평생 공부할 수 있는 능력을 얻는 데 있습니다. 엄격한 학술과 왕성한 학습 열정이 병존할 수 있습니다.

For example, Grade 6 students are currently learning about thermal energy transfer. They were challenged with the question:: “How can we keep the house cool in summer and warm in winter?”

예를 들어, 과학 수업 시간에 학생들은 '열전도' 지식을 배우는 과정에서 선생님은 여름에 방의 냉방을 어떻게 유지하는지, 겨울에 어떻게 난방을 하는지 질문하였습니다.

Daniel, a G6 student, decided to compare several different insulating materials and conducted a number of experiments. Through a  data collection, scientific process, he was finally able to reach his own conclusion and recorded these in essay form. He learned the relevant science, the scientific method, the application of knowledge and proper communication of findings as well.

6학년인 Daniel은 실험을 통해 몇 가지 다른 절연 재료를 비교하여 실험 결론을 도출하고 논문을 작성했습니다. 그는 지식을 습득했을 뿐만 아니라 배운 지식을 실제 상황에서 능숙하게 적용하였습니다.

Inquiry-based learning is an everyday phenomenon in the classrooms of Hong Qiao International School. Our students learn through real-life, action-oriented approaches.  Only students who have been challenged in rigorous academics, nurtured in a student-centered culture and instructed through inquiry-based learning will have the confidence to face the complexity of today’s and tomorrow’s world.

The development of essential academic and life skills is the second component of the Three Pillars.

The world has changed, and the pace of change is accelerating.  Traditional education models can no longer meet the standards of today’s environment. We believe that students need to master 21st-century skills to face the challenges of the future and make a positive difference in our shared world.

아시다시피, 지금의 이 시기는 모든 사람들의 관념을 재창조하고 있습니다. 세계의 불확실성 때문에 많은 사실들이 불투명해지고 있습니다. 이제 낡은 교육은 아이에게 확실한 미래를 보장하지 못합니다. 우리는 21세기의 핵심 능력을 가진 학생들이 시대의 난기류 속에서 자리 잡을 수 있으며 학교 교육은 이를 목표로 개혁되어야 한다고 믿습니다.

But what skills are 21st-century skills? The three most important skills are communication, creativity, and collaboration. At HQIS students develop these skills through inquiry-based learning, project learning and academic research.

무엇이 21세기의 핵심 능력입니까? 가장 중요한 세 가지는 커뮤니케이션 능력, 창조 능력, 협력 능력입니다. 홍차오국제학교는 탐구식 학습을 통해 학생들의 각 방면의 능력을 길러줍니다.

During the E-learning period, our upper school teacher has assigned a topic for students to do research on: "What are bacteria and viruses? What is the difference between them?"Responding to this topic, our teachers launched a series of inquiry-based studies for our students. The students did the necessary research and submitted their findings in a variety of formats. Students in Grade 7 drew comparison charts and shared their results online.

최근 코로나19은 지구촌의 이슈로 떠오르고 있습니다. 미래의 세계인이 무관심할 일은 아닐 것입니다. "박테리아와 바이러스는 무엇일까요? 그들이 어떻게 다른가요?" 학생들은 이 과제에 대한 탐구 학습을 하고 과제를 제출하였습니다. 7학년 학생들은 비교표를 그리고 자신의 연구 성과를 온라인으로 공유했습니다.

As this inquiry-based Project progressed, we saw the creativity of students’ progress. They presented their work in various forms. They currently demonstrate their learning in online classes, and have impressed us with their fluent use of language, through research and creative talents.

이 프로젝트를 통하여 우리는 학생들은 창의력을 발휘했습니다. 학생들은 논문과 포스터 및 Vlog 등 다양한 형태로 자신의 작품을 전시 했습니다. 이들은 인터넷 강의에서 자신의 작품을 시연하고, 모든 학생들은 자신감 있고 유창하게 자신의 의견을 발표했습니다.

Mr. Lambert Okma, HQIS Acting Head of School, is the founder of the International Academy, Oakland County, Michigan, the second largest IB Diploma granting school in the world. When Mr. Okma joined HQIS, he recognized the school’s strong foundation and its unlimited future.

Mr. Lambert Okma 는 세계 2위의 IB학교인 미국 국제 아카데미(IA)의 창립 교장으로 1996년 개교 후 불과 몇 년 만에 북미 1위의 IBDP 학교로 성장시켰습니다. Okma 총장이 우리 학교에 합류한 것은 학교의 '전통 유전자'와 미래의 발전에 대한 긍정적으로 평가할 수 있습니다. 탐구식 학습과 관련하여 그는 다음과 같이 말했습니다.

“Children are always curious about everything when they are young. They always keep asking you questions, even if their mother or fathers don’t always have the answers. In traditional schools children stop asking questions when they reach middle school or high school...”- "Traditional education weakens students' curiosity and limits their creativity. Educators should nurture and develop natural curiosity. Inquiry-based learning is the most effective way to achieve this."

"아이들은 어렸을 때 항상 모든 것에 호기심을 느끼고,  부모님에게 계속 질문을 합니다 하지만, 11, 12학년이 되면 그들은 더 이상 질문하지 않습니다." 이어서 Okma 총장은 "전통적인 교육은 학생들이 세상에 대해, 배움에 대한 호기심을 빼앗으며, 교육자는 학생들이 이런 자연스러운 호기심을 되찾을 수 있도록 도와야 하며 탐구식 학습이 최선의 선택이다" 라고 말했습니다.

In inquiry-based teaching, the teacher guides the students and gives assignments according to the students’ progress, to maximize the learning outcomes. "The key point is that the role of the teacher is more like a guide, a coach, rather than a source of knowledge." said Mr. Okma.

If academic skills are the starting base, then we can say that all the other skills become the "framework" that will build the whole child. "Global Citizenship", which we will discuss later, becomes the "background".

탐구 수업에서 선생님은 학생들을 지도하고 진행하는 단계에 따라 숙제를 내주며 도와줍니다."하지만 중요한 점은 교사의 역할이 지식의 제공자보다는 유인자, 코치의 역할이라는 점입니다."라고 Okma 교장이 말했습니다.

학문적 능력이 기초라면 그 능력이 한 사람을 떠받치는 '틀'이고, 우리가 다음으로 언급할 '세계시민'은 '바탕색'입니다.

The last part of our three pillars, “Living Environment", has many connotations. The origins of this go back to 1997 when Hong Qiao International School was founded.

3대 지주 시스템의 마지막 부분인 '세계 시민'은 그 내용이 풍부하며, 이념의 틀은 1997년, 홍차오국제학교가 처음 설립되었을 때로 거슬러 올라갑니다.

At that time, our then school campus was located in the Xijiao Park in Changning District, the closest place to nature in the city. Children were surrounded by nature, with tadpoles in spring and fireflies in summer.

당시 학교는 창닝구 서교공원 안에 위치하여 도시에서 자연과 가장 가까운 곳이었습니다. 아이들은 대자연 속에서 봄에는 올챙이, 여름에는 반딧불과 함께 했습니다.

The uniqueness of the natural environment at Shanghai Zoo even attracted one of the most famous anthropologists and biologists in the world, Jane Goodall. Teachers and students of Hongqiao International collaborated with Jane Goodall, learning about her work and designing, with her, the Apes Pavilion of Shanghai Zoo.

천혜의 자연환경에서 유명한 인류학자이자 생물학자인 진 구달이 방문하기도 했습니다. 아침, 저녁으로 학생들과 진 구달은 함께 생활하며 상하이 동물원의 오랑우탄관에 대해 공부하고 설계에도 참여했습니다.

The school's early foundation with the natural world has gradually evolved into a strong spirit of "world citizenship concern for our living environment". The global spread of the novel coronavirus makes us realize that the common destiny of humankind is a daily reality, not an abstraction. It is the mission of Hong Qiao International School that our students recognize their personal and national place in the world community, recognize the future challenges of mankind in protecting the environment, maintaining biodiversity and promoting sustainable development.

학교의 '자연을 끌어안는다'라는 유전자가 점차 '세계시민정신'으로 진화해 더 깊은 뜻을 담고 있습니다. 전염병의 전 세계적인 확산은 우리가 인류 공동체임을 깨닫게 합니다. 인간의 운명에 관심을 가지고 환경을 보호하고 생물의 다양성을 보존하며 지속 가능한 발전을 도모하는 것이 우리 학생들의 임무입니다.

In early February, when the coronavirus epidemic broke out in China. Hong Qiao International School launched "Project Planet", a first time, “call to arms” academic, research and community action project. We asked students to assume the role of ‘Guardians of The Planet’ and ‘Ambassadors of The Community’. The project’s purpose is to encourage students to be creative, conduct research, think critically and present the project in creative formats. The results have been impressive-exceeding our expectations.

2월 초 중국 내에 전염병이 발발했습니다. 우리 학교는 '지구 프로젝트'를 가동해 모든 학우들에게 지구 수호자와 세계 대사의 역할을 맡아 자신이 배운 것을 활용해 생각하고, 조사 연구를 진행해 창조적인 디자인과 방식으로 프로젝트를 구현할 것을 호소했습니다. 지금까지 우리는 많은 놀라운 프로젝트 성과를 보았습니다.

Our G9 student Robin recorded the reality of the epidemic in the streets with a video and told us his experience when he was hospitalized for a fishbone stuck in his throat!

Robin은 카메라로 발병한 거리의 모습을 기록하고, 목에 생선가시가 걸려 병원에 가야만 했던 경험에 대해 이야기합니다!

G9 student Calvert, however, told us about his grandfather who had a fever but refused to go to the hospital. You will be happy to know everything was fine - in the end).

Calvert는 동영상에서 자신의 할아버지가 열이 나지만 병원에 가기를 거부하는 이야기를 합니다(결과적으로 모든 것이 정상이었습니다).

The students were able to show the impact of the new coronavirus on the whole world, our city and their family from various points of view. Every child’s response recognizes that, no matter how small, their action can contribute to limiting the spread of the virus. Our children realized how the health of our environment is a vital issue, not just something covered on TV news and documentaries.

학생들은 코로나19가 전 세계, 우리 도시와 가족에게 미치는 영향을 여러 각도에서 보여주었고, 전염병의 유행을 통제하는데 작은 힘으로 기여했습니다. 학생들은 우리의 생존 환경을 보호하는 것은 멀리 있는 일이 아니라 바로 이 순간부터 우리 모두와 직결된다는 것을 깨달았습니다.
