Co-organised by Wellington College China and the Council of British International Schools, the Early Years Conference 2020 will be held in Pudong, Shanghai from 15-16 February. Workshops at this year’s conference will be facilitated by educators and Early Years experts from international and bilingual schools in China and abroad. This two-day training and networking event is an exciting opportunity for Early Years educators and industry professionals to develop new skills and knowledge.

The Foundations of Learning
Dr Julie Fisher
Dr Julie Fisher is a world-renowned independent Early Years Adviser with more than 30 years of experience in early years education. A Visiting Professor of Early Childhood Education at Oxford Brookes University, she also held the post of Early Years Adviser in Oxfordshire for 11 years. Prior to this Julie was a lecturer in Early Childhood Education at the University of Reading, and she has authored four influential early years texts, including The Foundations of Learning (2002) and Interacting of Interfering? (2016).
During this year’s keynote speech, Dr Julie Fisher will discuss why the early years of a child’s education is so important, and how these pivotal years of learning underpin all that follows. Julie’s keynote will draw a unique analogy between the foundations of learning and the foundations of buildings; both need to be strong, flexible, and deep. She will also examine the role of the adult, and how their guidance is critical to a child’s well-being, learning, and development.

Conference Workshops
Attendees at this year’s Early Years Conference will have an excellent selection of workshops to choose from. Presented by several innovative and outstanding speakers, we are delighted to present some of the conference workshops below:
Workshop 1
Interacting or Interfering
Dr Julie Fisher
This Masterclass will explore what is meant by ‘effective’ adult-child interactions. It will consider the role of the adult in both adult-initiated and child-initiated situations, with groups of children and with individual learners.
Using DVD footage from Dr Julie Fisher’s previous research, delegates will have the opportunity to reflect on their own practice when interacting with young learners. During this workshop delegates will be prompted to think about the quality of the practice for which they are responsible, and how they can ensure consistency in this critical area of Early Years education moving forward.
Workshop 2
A mindful approach to ‘being in the moment’ for an Early Years Environment

How can we offer children consistent, nurturing care and responsiveness? How can we build our capacity to stay focused and attentive to all children in our care? What helps us notice and respond sensitively to a child’s individual needs and emotions?
This workshop will explore the important role that calm and responsive adults, combined with secure adult-child relationships, play in helping young children learn and grow effectively. Warm and authentic relationships develop through attuned, sensitive, and genuine interactions. In this workshop there will be opportunities to consider what mindfulness practice can look like in an Early Years setting. Delegates will learn how to empower children to self-regulate, reflect, and cultivate compassion for themselves and others.
Workshop 3
Meaningful literacy approaches in bilingual Early Years education
Nikki and Sarah, Wellington College China
In this workshop, Literacy Leads from Wellington College China will share the most current practice in Early Years reading and writing practice. Delegates will acquire a deeper understanding about the impact literacy education has on the outcomes of young bilingual Chinese children.
Workshop 4
Forest Beach Schools

This workshop will unpack the key features of what was involved in setting up a leading Forest-Beach School Programme in Hong Kong, sharing the challenges, rewards, and lessons learned along the way. Delegates will discover how a Forest-Beach School Programme supports the development of children in all areas of the Early Years curriculum, particularly by extending children’s creativity, confidence, and critical thinking skills.
Workshop 5
The Wonder Wall Approach (pursuing interests of the unique child)
Representatives from British School of Muscat
The British School Muscat has adopted an ‘in-the-moment planning’ approach following a training session from Anna Ephgrave in 2015. This progressive approach to teaching is dependent on highly-skilled teachers who understand the difference between ‘interacting’ and ‘interfering’, are able to engage in open-ended questions that embrace the awe and wonder of childhood, and know how to capitalise on the endless possibilities that a holistic approach to teaching and learning provides.
One of the ways the British School of Muscat facilitates this approach is through their Wonder Wall. The school encourages curiosity and allows the children to ask big questions; they create the conditions to support these interests with provocations, enhancements, and meaningful contexts. In this workshop delegates will develop an understanding of how innovation in the Early Years curriculum can engage the individual child.
Workshop 6
What does a Reggio-Inspired Early Childhood Programme look like?
Lola Alvarez, Shanghai American School
The Reggio Emilia approach is an educational philosophy focused on Early Years education. This approach to teaching puts the natural development of children as well as the close relationships they share with their peers and their environment at the centre of its philosophy. The goal of this workshop is for participants to develop an awareness of how to re-interpret the Reggio Emilia Principles within the context of their own culture.
