This year has been an amazing adventure for us in the school library - we have such a vast range of books to choose from, leading the pupils to fantasy worlds and discovering new interests. We have explored these worlds alongside the pupils through collaborative events such as Bedtime Stories, Myths and Legends, and our author visit by Sarah Brennan during Literacy Week.
Now that the Summer holidays are almost here I am looking forward to devouring the latest offering from my favourite crime author and attending a weekend course in the UK which has been put on by the School Library Association called 'Building Readers, Building Identity' where I will be able to hear speakers such as Lauren Child, author of the 'Charlie and Lola and Clarice Bean' Series and Chris Riddell, author of 'Wendell and the Robot' and 'Ottoline and the Yellow Cat'. If these names sound familiar it could be because we have their books in our library collection!
Unfortunately, the school library will be closed over the summer whilst we organise the exciting new reads that we have ordered but I cannot stress enough the importance of getting children to continue to read during the summer break. Reading is a skill and like any other skill the more you practice, the better you get. To help with this we are once again teaming up with our reading partners, Obido and sending home the Summer Reading Club flyer that offers some great books that can be delivered directly to your home.

What the Ladybird Heard on Holiday

Recommended for ages 3 – 6
Those two bad men, Lanky Len and Hefty Hugh, are back! They may be in the city instead of the farm, but they haven't changed their thieving ways. In fact, they're even more ambitious. They're planning to steal a monkey from the zoo and use it to pinch the Queen's crown. It's a pity for them that a certain crime-busting ladybird is holidaying in the very same city . . . and she's got a good idea that will ensure the dastardly pair won't get away with it!
I always tell the pupils, this is my favourite author! I can read Julia Donaldson books every day and not get bored – a very important thing if you are reading to your children. If you sound like you are enjoying the book, they will enjoy it more. Don’t be afraid to put on funny voices while you read with them. They will love hearing it! This is a great book to take on holiday.
The Tale of Sybil Snake

Recommended ages 5-12
Everybody adores Sybil Snake – she’s beautiful, clever and extremely charming. But all is not as it seems in the Emperor’s menagerie, and Sybil is more of an enchantress than meets the eye! Fall under Sybil’s spell in this tale of mystery, missing treasure and the extraordinary magic of love. Ssss…sss…ss…s…s…s….
This book is from the Calendar Tales collection but stands out for me as it is set in Hangzhou and West Lake in particular. We were lucky to meet Sarah Brennan this year when she visited our school. She told me she loves to put historical facts into her books. The pictures will appeal to younger children but the story is complex and clever enough for older readers to enjoy.
The Island of Dr Libris

What if your favourite characters came to life? Billy's spending the summer in a lakeside cabin that belongs to the mysterious Dr. Libris. But something strange is going on. Besides the security cameras everywhere, there's Dr. Libris's private bookcase. Whenever Billy opens the books inside, he can hear sounds coming from the island in the middle of the lake. The clash of swords. The twang of arrows. Sometimes he can even feel the ground shaking. It's almost as if the stories he's reading are coming to life! But that's impossible . . . isn't it?
Year 6 enjoyed a book by the same author this year, so I think they will love this offering – a real treat for classic literature lovers!
Aru Shah and the End of Time

Twelve-year-old Aru Shah, has a tendency to stretch the truth in order to fit in at school. While her classmates are jetting off to family vacations in exotic locales, she'll be spending her autumn break at home, in the Museum of Ancient Indian Art and Culture, waiting for her mom to return from her latest archeological trip. One day, three schoolmates show up at Aru's doorstep to catch her in a lie. They don't believe her claim that the museum's Lamp of Bharata is cursed, and they dare Aru to prove it. But lighting the lamp has dire consequences. She unwittingly frees the Sleeper, an ancient demon whose duty it is to awaken the God of Destruction. Her classmates and beloved mother are frozen in time, and it's up to Aru to save them.
This book has been presented by Rick Riordan, author of the Percy Jackson series, and has been nominated for a Panda Book Award……I think this would be a must-read for any and all fantasy book lovers!
