Amid all the uncertain news surrounding us, one thing is for sure: HQISers are certainly making their mark in the academic world!
This year we have received good news from American colleges. Our first high school graduate, has received offers from many Top 30 universities in the US; most recently from the University of California – Irvine, and Purdue University. She previously received offers from both Northeastern University and Pennsylvania State University. We can say that Jenny is literally harvesting university offers!

We wanted to interview Jenny to share with our parents, students and all of our community members her amazing experience as a graduate student. Here’s the content of the interview:

Inquiry-based Learning Taught Me How to Think

The teacher will connect the key points of the knowledge we want to learn with real-life issues, so that the whole learning process is stimulating and fun.
At HQIS Upper School, inquiry-based learning is the core of each subject area.

HQIS Inquiry Circle
During physics class, the teacher will request Jenny to do many kinds of experiments. The basketball experiment let her understand the laws of gravity; the zero-resistance slide experiment made her understand the concepts of friction coefficient and acceleration; the doorbell alarm experiment allowed made her realize what the Circuit Theory is about.

Physics teachers and Jenny one-on-one guidance to demonstrate the circuit by using Virtual Lab.
Another example is English class: when Jenny talked about human rights, our teacher guided her through the whole inquiry process, and she were able to conduct research autonomously, leading her step-by-step to find materials and useful resources. Every single connection makes Jenny feel satisfied and pleased. The brainstorming sessions Jenny had with her teachers and classmates were really helpful; in fact, Jenny was able to have a better comprehension from deeper points of view.

It could give Jenny many other examples with many different topics, subjects, lines of inquiry, and opportunities for self-improvement. Jenny learned how to make videos and how to write research reports. But the best and most satisfying thing is that now she can stand in front of an audience, sharing with confidence her point of view and opinions.

When Thinking Becomes a Habit

During the creation of the scripts, I observed our works from the different angles of the creator and the audience. I found that by changing different roles, it is easy to change your point of view.
Jenny is passionate about history, and she learns a lot from historical documentaries. She's also an art lover, and she often visits exhibitions alone. This was her answer when we asked about her favorite hobbies. One of the things Jenny is most proud of is when she was founding our school’s film club.
Jenny told us that:" I created a Film Club because I like everything about movies, I love to watch movies and I love to make short movies, I enjoy the process of thinking before and after the completion of a movie. Here I met a lot of friends with the same interests. I also submitted one of my scripts to the Shanghai University Film Festival."
Jenny integrates her “philosophy” into her art creations as well. Her masterpiece “Me” is displayed on the first floor of our campus, and it is so wonderful that many people ask if the creator is really one of our students.

In this picture, it illustrates two of “me”: the “original” one (the right half) and the “macroscopical” one (the left half). The thesis of this artwork is that every-one is made up of things around them. There is no “me” that exists because everyone is made up by experience. Everyone is just one carrier for experiences and memories.

The right side is painted and shows with only the colors of black and white. The face has stitches, buttons, and cotton that makes it looks like a doll—a man-made stuffed toy with no spirit. The only thing that has color are the faces cut from magazines. This illustrates all the influences the “stuffed toys” (every human being) takes from the outside world. It represents the influence of the outside world, the personality of every human being. The faces’s eyes were cut because they would look more like unidentifiable people.

The left side of the painting has colors and beautiful decorations. It illustrates the “personality” people think they have. The eyes cut from magazines represent the identities of all people. The step of adding the eyes to this side of the artwork represents the step of adding “identities” to people. A mirror was put on the left-hand side so that you can try to interact with the artwork.
Jenny told us that this painting actually has another name, "Life Factory", and the meaning is: what you are now is just the result of your experiences.
Usually, Jenny likes to visit art galleries and art exhibitions, she loves to contemplate artworks and to communicate with artists. It is because of her “thinking skills” that Jenny finally chose Philosophy as her major of study.

The best thing for me is that HQIS supported my aspiration and ambition.
For example, the school's Earth Day let Jenny organize and plan a vast number of meaningful activities, such as the Million Trees project and the fundraising for Operation Smile.

The Model United Nations gave her a special opportunity:" I could stand in front of many people and share my opinions like a real UN deputy."
During the Literacy Week at HQIS, Jenny was able to read many stories and to share her ideas with younger students.

Jenny participated in The Model United Nations as delegation held in 2019.
The personal statement is written with all my heart instead of simple words. I hope that every sentence written in my statement bears a memory of my own.

Do you have any advice to share for younger students?
I think students should try their best and work hard to follow the school curriculum. Students of Grade 11 must undertake the big challenges in their academics, while students of Grade 9 and Grade 10 should start to prepare. If you prepare in advance things will be much smoother later.
