Be Ambitious

有人说，来到南通不能不识狼山、濠河、张謇，来到南通四月有余未登狼山，未游濠河，却通过《大情怀大世界张謇的企业家精神》这本书了解了张謇及南通企业家的教育情怀。

张謇，南通海门人，以通达天下的胸襟，参仿西法，开启南通工业化进程；把握世界潮流，规划地方自治；倡导工艺博览，争衡五洲名产；建设规范城市，迎来世界眼光。实施世界眼光教育，培养开门商战人才，创办各类学校近400所，1920年美国教育家、哲学家杜威来到南通讲学考察，对南通教育事业寄予厚望：“南通者，教育之源泉，吾尤望其成为世界教育之中心也。”

张謇虽然与我们身处不同时代，但却拥有着超越时代的世界眼光、全球格局，创实业，兴教育。曾国藩有言：“谋大事者首重格局”，格局指眼界、心胸，做人的态度，行事的方式。

培养学生大格局、大胸怀、大智慧是南通诺德安达双语学校的又一重要目标。既重视学生从书本上获得知识，又设计不同的活动鼓励学生走出校门见识更广阔的世界。低年级学生将结合不同的探究主题去实地观察、调查，如参观博物馆、观察产品从原料到商品的过程、采访不同的职业，不同的人对某个问题的看法，从小理解相同和差异；到瑞士参加个人挑战探险活动，承受大自然的磨练；到坦桑尼亚感受草原的辽阔，惊叹于大自然的伟大。高年级的学生利用国外暑假夏令营，与不同国家的人相处，体验不同文化的冲击，学会尊重和包容，认识到社会因人类的相同而宁静，世界因人类的不同而精彩。

出国读书不仅仅是为了获得一个国外大学的文凭，更重要的是看到更大的世界，拥有更高的眼界和更大的格局，这个才是国际化教育本身的意义。

It is said that if you come to Nantong, the Langshan Mountain, the Haohe River and the famous entrepreneur Zhang Jian are the most important scenic spots and people you cannot miss. I came to work here four months ago, but still haven’t had the chance to visit the Langshan Moutain and Haohe River, but luckily, I get to know the constant emphasis of education presented by Zhang Jian and other entrepreneurs of the city through a book named “Broad Vision, Big World - The Entrepreneurial Spirit of Zhang Jian”.

Born and raised in Nantong in the mid-19th century, Zhang Jian initiated the industrialization process of Nantong with his big vision and promotion of Western technology. He followed the trend of the world development, planned local autonomy and promoted technology to make the local products more competitive among the world-renowned products. He also helped to build a standardized city, attracting attention for all over the globe. In addition, Zhang Jian focused on education and trained international business talents by establishing more than 400 schools.

The American educator and philosopher John Dewey visited Nantong in 1920 and placed great expectations on the city’s education cause, saying that “Nantong is the hometown of education and I truly hope that it can become a world-class center of education.”

Although lived in a quite different time, Zhang Jian still had an international vision of doing business and promoting education. Zeng Guofan, a famous politician of the Qing Dynasty, once said that “vision is the priority for a man who wants to make an extraordinary achievement in his career.”

Vision can be one’s sight, ambition, attitude and way of doing things. One of the important goals of NAS Nantong is to help students form a board vision, ambition and wisdom, as they will not only learn from text books, but also get to know the outside world through various activities planned by our school. Students of junior grades will participate in fields trips, including visiting museums, observing the process of turning row material into products, interviewing people of different professions and listening to others’ opinions towards different things. They will also have opportunity to participate in adventures in Switzerland and Tanzania, where they can feel the beauty of nature. As for students of senior grades, they will learn to get along with different people and experience cultural shock in summer camps abroad, which will help them to understand and respect different cultures and know that we live harmoniously because of our similarities, and the world becomes an extraordinary place because of our differences.

Obtaining diploma from a foreign university is not the only objective for a student to study abroad. Most importantly, they should broaden their vision, which is the essential significance of international education.
