Peking Opera entered YK Pao School
On March 27th, eminent Peking Opera actress Wang Peiyu visited Pao School and delighted students with her vivid presentation about one of China's most storied theatrical traditions.

Wang Peiyu talked to students about the evolution of Peking Opera as well as its different schools and representative figures.

To better understand the essence of Peking Opera, students followed Wang Peiyu's lead as she showed them how to convey different emotions with body language. The presentation helped our students understand Peking Opera is not an art form limited to the stage. Indeed, it is relevant to our daily lives too, especially for students at YK Pao School, as passing on traditions of Chinese culture is one of the key elements of the school’s mission.

Wang Peiyu and Pao School Co-founder Tan Fuyun
At the end of Wang Peiyu's presentation, Pao School Co-founder Tan Fuyun thanked her for teaching Pao students one of the most fascinating and artistically rich elements of traditional Chinese culture.

Touch Rugby

On a beautiful weekend day in late March, Pao School hosted the first touch rugby game of the season at our Primary campus, where we faced off against SUIS Shangyin. On their way to a decisive 8-2 victory, the Pao players exhibited outstanding teamwork skills, steely determination and sterling sportsmanship. Our touch rugby players will continue training hard for the rest of the games this season. Great work by everyone involved and a special thanks to parents who came out to show their support.
Girls Football & Boys Football

Our Girls Football team turned in an oustanding performance during the tournament held at Nord Anglia Chinese International School in Minhang last week. Thanks to their outstanding teamwork and determined playing, they reached the Plate competition, and after some very tough first games they reached the finals. The last game of the finals was a nail biter which was tied at the end of regulation time. The crowd was on the edge of its seat for the penalty shootout, which resulted in a win for our girls and them taking home the Plate championship!

Our Year 5 Boys Football team took part in an SSSA tournament. After months of training both at school and in the evenings and weekends, they had the opportunity to put their skills into practice against 7 other schools from in and around Shanghai. After two 4-0 wins and a draw in the group stages, our boys progressed to the semi-final where they beat SUIS Shangyin 4-1, reaching the final against SUIS Pudong. We found our rhythm after a tense start, and managed to score two quick goals which took the pressure off and we held out for an impressive win and the championship trophy! Well done to all the students involved, they showed great character throughout the day and represented our school fantastically well. A big thank you also goes to our parents for their support and to coach DJ for leading the team!
Badminton

Last week our Badminton team took part in a tournament at the French School Shanghai. Our team showed outstanding resilience against some very tough opposition and had a respectful but determined attitude throughout. The event was great fun and the students thoroughly enjoyed their time on and off court and put in some outstanding performances. Extra special mentions go to Sam and Bobo for 3rd place and Alida and Luis for 4th place.

Cycle for Love
On March 24th, the third Cycle for Love charity ride was held in Shanghai's Pudong District. This charity ride was jointly organized by student cycling clubs of YK Pao School and four other bilingual schools in Shanghai. Nearly 300 people participated in the event during which they traveled 3,000 kilometers. Most importantly, the event raised 20,000 RMB for children receiving treatment at Ningbo No.1 Hospital (Department of Hematology and Oncology). Since the first Cycle for Love charity ride in April 2017, more than 120,000RMB has been raised to support twelve families in need.

Background board designed by Viola
Year 10 student Viola led the organization of this event. She began planning for it in November 2018, communicating with parents, other participating schools and more. The organizing committee from Pao school planned the whole event, from cycling routes selection, sponsors recruitment, logistics and event promotion. Rather than the shorter, winding 5 km route of years past, this year's race featured a long 32 km route for more experienced riders.

Although it's no walk in the park organizing a large-scale event like this one, it's a valuable learning experience, from which I learned things I couldn't learn in the classroom alone, especially how to communicate with people from all walks of life. These are the types of skills we work for years to develop at Pao School.

The National Economics Challenge (NEC) is a prestigious competition organized by the Council for Economic Education and has been held successfully for seventeen years with around 100,000 participants each year.
Ling Ling Poets' Competition
In the recent international Ling Ling Poets’ competition which is dedicated to discovering promising young poets who are born after the year 2000 (Lingling) and who master dual-language writing or even multi-language writing skills, Pao students demonstrated outstanding performances.
