The outbreak of COVID-19 is causing a lot of concern across the globe. At this challenging time, online learning shortens the distance between teachers and students.
How are NAS Beijing students adapting to the new learning environment? How are teachers helping our students online?
Have a look!

Primary School students are developing a better understanding of their use of IT, their digital literacy skills and therefore becoming digital citizens while learning online.
From Grade 1 to Grade 6, students are using a dedicated system as a platform for their learning. They are listening to their teachers read to them and watching videos. They can ask questions via audio, video or in writing and converse with teachers who may be in different time zones to them. This week we have started to use Microsoft Teams, which means they can discuss, debate and engage in live lessons with their teachers wherever those students or teachers are.
Our students are using technology to learn; they are learning to behave and communicate responsibly online; they are understanding how problems can be solved with technology; they are using different digital media to complete tasks and communicate and they are collaborating with others across Beijing, China and the world. Fantastic learning opportunities have emerged from a very difficult and challenging situation!
Both staff and students are adapting and being creative in dealing with our new e-learning environment. As a school, we see this as a period to both demonstrate the strong digital literacy skills our staff already have, as well as develop this area with an emphasis on ensuring we do everything we can to support our students.
While our internal platform remains our key hubs for resources and lessons, staff have also been using Microsoft Teams to deliver virtual lessons. Teachers have been both trialing and using many other digital tools such as Quizlet, Socrative and Near Pod. Many of our teachers are trying new and innovative methods of teaching to ensure that our students are given every possible opportunity to continue with their learning in this difficult situation.
At this challenging time, how can parents support children's learning?

1. Take regular breaks
Children, particularly young children, can only concentrate for short periods at a time. Please consider this and take regular 'brain breaks'.
2. Learning is fun!
Children learn best when they are engaged and enjoying their learning. Discuss what they have learnt with them and tell them about how it relates to your life and work.
3. Children learn all the time!
Your child is learning all the time. Therefore, if you can try to include your child in practical activities in or around your home and incorporate maths, reading, vocabulary, problem solving etc into the activity it is an excellent and easy way for your child to learn. For example, preparing food or shopping can be an excellent opportunity to use maths. Writing a shopping list or a daily journal can be a great time to practise our writing. Above all encourage your children to read. Discuss what they are reading with them and let them see you love books too.
