An Ear Opening Experience!

Throughout the past, music had always been ineffaceable and acted as a main role of delivering ideology as well as expressing emotions. With the development of time, music also evolved as we step into the future. The integration of digital technology and art has already become the main trend of artistic development in the 21st century.
We are honored to have Dr. Richard Boulanger, Electronic Music Pioneer and Master Composer, Producer, Distinguished professor from Berklee College of Music EPD (Electronic Production and Design), to give us a lecture of ‘Future Directions in Sound, Music, and Audio Art' this week.
Dr. Boulanger used to study classical music, but then started to investigate electronic music later on. Strong of his experience of over 40 years of research and application in electro-acoustic music, he vividly demonstrated how music would sound like in the future: unrestrained and vigorous.
At the start of the lecture, we were all dazzled by the intricacy of the sophisticated setup of the equipment, such as the innumerable cables that connects the interfaces. Dr. Boulanger was standing on the stage, rotating and twisting the gamepad-like EDI (Electronic Digital Instrument) that controls the tone, rhythm, and all elements of the mysterious sounds of the ticktocking ‘water drops’. He demonstrated how this complex equipment could create fascinating sounds, and how each and every sound interact with one another, which exploits a new way of audio art and a new way to compose music.
We were also amazed to discover how these interfaces can allow a kinesthetic way of composing and performing music: the piece “for violin and body” was very impressive. So was the “brain waves interface”!
After this “ear opening” conference, some students particularly interested in composition were given a workshop.
During the workshop session, Dr. Boulanger exhibited his research findings and taught us how the applications such as Spear, Cecilia, Csound, and Audacity contribute to the production of (present!) and future music. His rich experiences assisted our exploration of music, his passionate and fun presentation reflected his love for music and invited us along to enjoy audio art.
Dr. Richard Boulanger’s lecture demonstrated the significance of innovation and creativity in music, and as students we benefited a lot from his workshop. The quality of Dr Boulanger’s feedback on our composition, the dynamism of his presentation, the novelty of the topic for us, made it a truly unique experience. We are grateful for it, and want to thank Dr Boulanger and his team, the Music & Movement department and SUIS Gubei to offer this opportunity to us.
