亲爱的各位家长和同学们,


我是北京诺德安达学校教育学监Adrian Macaulay。希望你们一切安好。随着新冠病毒在全球的蔓延,我和我的家庭正在乌兹别克斯坦经历着大家曾经历过的居家隔离生活,暂时还无法来到北京与大家见面。在这个艰难的时期,也让我有了更多的时间去思考生活中重要的事情,为随时回到北京诺德安达的大家庭做充足的准备。期待着将我多年的工作经验所得分享给每一位老师,家长和同学。我期待在北京开启人生的新篇章。


已经获悉北京确定了开学日期,我校也将于6月1日开学,欣喜于每一位北京诺德安达学子即将返校。也希望家长和同学们在这段时间里能安排好学生的作息时间以此来适应开学后的学习安排。学校也将竭尽全力为学子返校做出安全保障。


作为一名有超过30年工作经验的教育工作者,我热衷于指定教学策略,以确保帮助学生最大程度的发掘潜力。而要在双语环境中做到这一点,就需要运用正确的语言习得的方法。值得与您分享的是,我们的老师在这方面拥有着非常丰富的经验,这将让学生们获得更好的学术成绩并带给孩子们真正的双语体验。

Dear parents and students,


I hope that you are well, and I am writing from a locked down Uzbekistan with my family as the global pandemic continues to impact our life outside of China. It is at this difficult period that a time of reflection causes me to look at the important things in life and how to share my experiences with every teacher, parent and student as I look forward to starting the new chapter of my life in Beijing.


We have learned that Beijing has confirmed the opening date of the school, and our school will open on June 1st. We are glad that every student in Beijing nodeanda will return to school soon. I also hope that parents and students can arrange the students' work and rest time during this period to adapt to the learning schedule after the new semester. The school will do its best to ensure the safety of students returning to school.


As an educator for over 30 years I am passionate in developing strategies to ensure the fulfillment of student potential. To do this in a Bilingual setting there needs to be the correct methodology in language acquisition, and I want to share with you the best practise that our teachers will be implementing, that will allow better academic achievement, and a true bilingual experience.

曾经有人说过“所有的学习都是从‘我不知道’开始的”,我对这句话理解就是要为孩子们提供一个值得信赖的安全环境,从而激发孩子们去做一些具有开创性的活动。我们的教师团队会赞扬、支持和鼓励孩子们去做他们所需要挑战未知的活动。从而激发学生们更快地发展技能,培养对学习的热爱。


采用分组学习的方式是一个可以最大程度提高孩子学习能力的关键教学方法。我们的教师会指导和支持各个小组的孩子们建立一个可以自由交流的环境,在这个环境中,孩子们会自然而然的提升自身的语言习得。我们会规划好每个小组的学习内容,要使每个孩子都拥有特定的角色,保证每个孩子都不会脱离小组的学习。我们会在一些适当的情况下,我们也会要求孩子们使用母语,适当的使用母语也是必要的,因为母语也同样需要练习和使用,而这种方法,也能使二语习得得到更好的提升。

An unknown author once wrote “all learning begins with the simple phrase 'I don't know.'", and it is the understanding of this to enable and create a safe and secure environment which makes students feel safe and ensure they are willing to take risks. Teachers and support staff provide support, challenge, praise and encouragement which accompanies this, and with this supportive base, students develop skills quicker and fosters a love of learning.


The way in which we are grouping children, is another key element of ensuring the maximum impact of learning. As educators we need to provide opportunities for peer models to provide language support, as it often the students themselves that can also promote language acquisition. Collaborative group work is planned out and roles given to ensure students aren’t left out of the learning. It is also appropriate that opportunities are provided for students to use the first language where appropriate. This is something that needs to be used.

在我们的课堂教学当中,教师会通过使用电子白板,将课程的关键字以及要点标注出来, 适当的时候也会翻译成母语供学生参考。这种电子白板教学环境可以给予孩子视觉上的支持和刺激,从而促进语言习得。我们的老师会展示一些学生的课后作业,并对作业大加赞赏,这种方法能更好的鼓励孩子学习。在课堂上,老师通常也会使用一些手势来辅助第二语言教学,我们力求讲话清晰,避免口语化,同时放慢语速,这样学生才有足够的时间去理解老师所说的话,从中慢慢地找到关键词、从而重新措辞以达到接收重要信息的目的。


当开始第二语言学习时,创造更多的交谈机会是成功的基础。课堂外,家长可以鼓励孩子使用第二语言交流。在课堂上,无论是学生之间还是师生之间,我们会提供大量的交流机会。说和听是双语学习的基本工具。我们会规划好特定的情境,再学生明确自己的角色和任务的同时进行有目的性的交谈。每一次上台讲话或完成作业之前,我们会预留足够的时间让学生提前练习。

Our classrooms ensure the visual support and stimuli which promotes language acquisition, with classroom displays showing keywords (and we are developing  translations where possible) and main points of the curriculum studies. Children’s work is celebrated which provides positive feedback, engages and motivates the children in their learning. As practitioners we often modify what we say by using gestures and non-verbal communication, in tandem with speaking clearly,  and at all costs avoiding colloquialisms. It is also vital to slow down the pace of delivery, helping students  to have time to process what we say, emphasising key words, rephrasing and restating important information.


As we begin the journey of development in this second language, creating opportunities for talk is fundamental to success and it is an area that parents can encourage where possible out of school. Within the curriculum we provide lots of opportunities for student to student talk and student to teacher talk. Speaking and listening are the initial tools required to become a fully bilingual learner. Purposeful talk is planned, students are provided with clearly defined tasks and roles within this. Students should also always be given time to practise what they are going to say before speaking in front of class or writing in books.

作为教师也是学术的实践者,我们需要给孩子足够的时间去思考,理解和反馈,这样我们才能更好的掌握孩子对事物的理解。我们鼓励任何形式的交流,如果学生对某一要点感到困惑,那么学生可以用母语来进行提问和解释。互动能力的提升通常是一个概念被完全掌握最清晰的标志。如果学生可以向别人解释某一概念,那么意味着他已经完全掌握了这一概念的涵义。个人生词表是另一种非常有效的学习策略,学生可以很容易的创建自己的词汇库并形成个性化的学习经验。


以上这些是一名有经验的语言教育从业者在学生语言学习过程中使用到的一些“行业技巧”,同时也是具备诺德安达学校的教学策略与技巧特色。我们希望通过运用这些教学技巧和行业技能让所有学生都有使用两种语言的能力。

As academic practitioners we are able to monitor children’s understanding by giving thinking time to understand and respond. We actively encourage any attempt to communicate, and an effective strategy is having a student clarify a point in the home language if a concept is unclear to a student. This ability for peer interaction often is the clearest indicator that a concept is fully mastered, if you can explain to another. Personal dictionaries are another highly effective strategy that can be simply created but personalise the learning experience.


These are just some of the “tricks of the trades” that skilled language practitioners are able to call upon in the development of students, and it is these strategies and skills that are a feature of learning in a Nord Anglia Education School. All students have the capability to be bilingual, but it is the effective cognitive development that is planned and implemented in our schools, that sets us apart.
